Blimey, where to start without boring you? From the very beginning, life has always seemed a little off-kilter to me. I was born in Blackpool, but aged 18 months, my parents, disillusioned with life, decided to pack their bags, and bundled me, my sister, and grandma onto a boat, and off we all went to start a new life in Canada. One solitary winter convinced them that the weather was too extreme, so they moved on again, this time to sunny California. The illusion of paradise there was also short-lived when after a year they realised that a large part of the country was infected with the awful paranoia of reds-under-the-beds McCarthyism. So they cut their losses and bundled us back onto another ocean liner sailing us all back to Blighty.
I went through the usual traumatic Grammar school education, and was no wiser as to a career, so stumbled into University College London allegedly to learn dentistry. This lasted a single term… not surprising as this was 1972, and all I really wanted to do was take drugs, play rock n roll and stay up late. I spent several years in the badlands of London squats, Amsterdam for a while, wandered around slacking before doing a fine art degree at Leeds. Served a 25 year hard labour sentence in retail, financing other projects. One way or another, I’ve been involved with both music and visual arts ever since. Musical influences flowed irregularly and unpredictably, trying to join the dots between between Soul /Rock/Pop/Folk/Psychedelia/Reggae/Dub/Dancehall/Punk/BeBop/post Bop/Cool/ECM/Salsa/Electro dub/Afrobeat/Cumbia/Soca/Shoegaze/Minimalism/House/DnB/Techno/and Ambient.
In the late eighties, I started organising free parties for friends in a friends barn in countryside outside Blackpool...these became more and more elaborate, until a chance meeting with Chris from the Beat-Herder festival allowed me to take things to the next level. he allowed us to organise a venue there which eventually became The Perfumed Garden.
