Time to stop the rot. This job is more than big enough and certainly more than important enough to merit someone's undivided attention for five years.

The MPs' expenses scandal and ensuing scrutiny of MPs' incomes and 'secondary' jobs was part of the toxic mix that helped to catastrophically undermine public trust in politicians.

In my view, this was also part of the context which ultimately led to Leave winning the EU referendum. For so many people, especially outside London and the south east, it seemed that we had an aloof political elite, lining their pockets whilst most of us saw declining incomes and living standards.

I'm not one of those who thinks that all MPs are corrupt and on the make. There are a lot of excellent and ethical MPs who really do want to improve things for the people of the UK. There's even a certain political leader who has consistently had the lowest expenses claims in parliament and who has no additional paid jobs. I'll name no names.

But I believe that £77,000 plus expenses is a very good income and that people who are elected to represent us should not be doing second jobs at all. I know that means that the majority of Tory MPs would either have to quit parliament or take a big cut in income but, hey, what can you do?

Time to stop the rot. This job is more than big enough and certainly more than important enough to merit someone's undivided attention for five years.
