Campfire Convention 001.UK took place in the beautiful spot in the Golden Valley on the English side of The Black Mountains (just a few miles from the original and inspirational first Big Chill Gala event which created history 21 years ago) and utilised one of the most spectacular pub settings in the UK, surrounded by a stream and open fields leading to the Cat's Back and the foothills leading to Offa's Dyke.
Those who came experienced and contributed to a lively mix of talks, debates, workshops and discussions, with a Saturday evening knees up with live music and DJs. The pub - The Bridge Inn in Michaelchurch Escley was open throughout the weekend, serving a wide range of locally produced food, along with beers, ciders as well as the usual range of wines, spirits and softs. Our music line-up features English roots pioneers Edward II appearing with Mancunian broadside balladress Jennifer Reid, guitar wizard Adrian Legg, Anna and Elizabeth on tour from the US and folk whirlwind duo Will Pound and Eddy Jay. We welcomed the legend that is Greg Wilson to the decks for our first Saturday night DJ slot, as well an appearance on a Sunday panel on protest and counterculture. Our keynote speaker Brian Eno was extremely well received, getting proceedings off to a fine start and Sunday's keynote matched him all the way with an inspirational talk from peace activist Scilla Elworthy.
